Reply # 5 <<The Gap ad...why wearing such sucky clothes?>> sometimes more is less 40 - 50 years ago, 1950 -1960, us(?) as teenagers tv was black & white with 3 channels tv and movies were our window on the world tame and G rated was the view we saw Mom at home, Dad at work, etc. we were young and looking for identity in what we saw we saw very little comparied to what is seened today, 1999 what we did not see was no big bombshell later when we saw but until then we knew there was more to life it was hidden like a good mystery novel we waited with expectation we imagined of possibilities and tried to prepare ourselfs cloths were always important for style and good looks only that 0.1% ouside mainstream dressed to be different Today's 1999 teenagers thru tv, movies, computers, etc. sees the world in a view that will focus on the spectacular, the event or image that will evoke a strong reaction to gain their attention. Such is the sex, hate, violence, danger, hurt, sadness, criminal, damage, grief, etc. that is present in large amounts every day. We of long ago knew of all these things, but it was in a mention or heresay, not in todays live on the spot in living color with closeups and replayed over and over, as if its important to see and observe and make close contact with. Teenagers today are engulfed with the bad and hurt and wrong of all the world translated into the news, tv, movies and now computer games. Imagine a boy of age 7 today, able to talk and listen and make observations of whats around him. Compare that to what you had 50 -60 years ago. Imagine him sucking this in for 7 more years, then at age 14 he does something that makes all the people in the age group 50 - 60 ask "why, doesn't make sence". <<The Gap ad...why wearing such sucky clothes?>> My take, a possible guess. The teenagers view the world as mentioned above and is able to experience it all thru viewing or actual or in a computer game. Not the view I had where the future was hidden and not knowned except thru my hopes and dreams. If I saw life as it is and will be as per tv etc., then I would feel quite a heavy dark not nice present and future. But what to do, what can I do. Will wearing sucky clothes change anything ? No, but teenagers feel a desire to obtain them not because they are different or sucky, but simply because these cloths seem to belong not in the present life as viewed everyday, and to "go" to these cloths is like to go elsewhere to another place to live in, to have a feeling to escape what is present in the world. To me all they are trying to do is to leave what is and go to another existence. But they are aware not of this, and are even aware that nothing will change. But what other avenue do they have ? They look around and see all the stuff that is not nice or relaxing thru the media and for a young person to accept this as the now and later is a heavy thing. So they see something detacted from the today, and is drawned. An escape that does not remove you from where you were. Walk a mile in my shoes becomes, live a day in the life as a young person not yet out into the world outside parents house, but seeing what all see. To me unstable, it is. Unstable enought for average teenagers in average homes in average schools with no alcohol or drugs problems, to do something along the lines of what they see as happening thru the tv etc. media as this is life, we all see and accept it and nothing is really done to address it, so hurt and violence such as shooting and killing and wars and people fighting other people with weapons is part of life, not the far side or dark side, but everyday life. So the teenagers react to a situation that causes them to counter with action, and they use what "is life" in todays world, violence. Thus guns and rifles used at that highschool by regular students against other students, and to them they were just doing by example of life as they saw it thru the media. Notice that these teenagers were above average in IQ, that they acted not thru dumbness or ignorance, but thru observations and learning thru example of present day life. No surprise many want out either thru suicide or cloths that seem not of this life. Doug
