Time should be spent on finding a better explanation, rather than defending the best we have
You have a shallow understanding of the scientific method. Attacking and defending theories is how better explanations are produced. New explanations must explain more and better if they are going to be accepted. It's not enough to just trot the same old explanations with a new jingle.

To what would you be referring? I know of no gaping holes in the theory of evolution. Perhaps you would be kind enough to point some out.
