Samsung Electronics Develops Next-Generation IMT-2000 Handsets

Seoul, Oct. 4 (Bloomberg) -- Samsung Electronics Co., the world's largest maker of memory chips, said
it developed an advanced mobile phone handset, completing a three-year 100 billion won ($83.3
million) project.

Samsung Electronics, along with other South Korean telecommunications service companies such as
SK Telecom Co., Hansol PCS Co., and Dacom Corp., are boosting their investment to jump into the
potentially lucrative market ahead of their rivals. The government expects providers to offer the service
commercially in January 2002.

Samsung claimed that it became the world's first company to complete the development of technology
for all aspects of the IMT- 2000 mobile phones, which are capable of sending moving pictures of users
along with voice transmission. Digital cameras can be hooked up to the handset so users can take
pictures and transmit the image.

The comprehensive development includes a so-called mobile station modem -- a core device that has
long been the exclusive domain of Qualcomm Inc. -- as well as moving picture data transmission and
core semiconductor chips, the company said.
