I suppose the objection is to the use of the word appalling. It seems a disproportionate response to anything certainly known about the Reagans' family relations. My impression is that one could criticize him for not overcoming the difficulty of two sets of children sufficiently, and for following the contemporary model of being absorbed in his career and somewhat aloof, but that there is little else to say about it with any confidence.....

I just asked you to substantiate your opinion of his "appalling" family life. What particularly did you find so appalling?

Given what we know about Bill Clinton's family life, I would agree that it is indeed appalling. So we can agree that it's fair to form an opinion about whether we should justifiably be appalled by his treatment of his family

So again, what was so appalling about Reagan's family life. His divorce? Be specific now, I'm really curious as to what what you find so horrible....
