All I want, at this moment, is to ascertain what we are arguing about. Few people are against "progress", by definition it is a good thing. The question is always what is progress, and what is an imprudent or destructive innovation. It is not, for example, progress to use "gender studies" to undermine science, by calling into question the legitimacy of the scientific method, induction, and mathematical logic because of an alleged phallocentric bias. It is, on the other hand, progress to bring improved schools and jobs to the inner city. According to conservatives, vouchers, charter schools, and enterprise zones (using tax abatement to encourage business development), coupled with improved policing to make these areas safer and more user friendly, will accomplish some of this. We may be wrong, but the intention is, in fact, to help residents of the ghetto, and thus to make progress in alleviating social ills. Now, could you specify what would be progressive philosophy, or, in the alternative, what would be a representative list of progressive policies. Some we might agree on, some not, but it might surprise you to get down to the details of policy debate.....
