re:"How does this refund affect AMD's bottom-line"

Cheap advertising?

The IBM demo I was checking out also had the AMD 750 chipset.

But, looking at this,

cpureview.com

I would guess the Athlon CPUs selling now are being sold cheaper than the rebate CPUs (now including the rebate) which were sold earlier to OEMs.

An example, a cpu Athlon (550)sold in August for $500 plus the rebate=$400 for AMD. They sell that same cpu today for $306.

What's the delay between AMD and Best Buy? 30-60 days? I don't know.

Clear as mud. I almost lost myself.

Charles will be by later to bail me out......(I hope!)

Yougang,

<How does this refund affect AMD's bottom-line:
Both IBM and CPQ's Athlon machine sold at BBY have a 100 USD refund from AMD: This ad is taken from this week's ad from BBY:>

The exact effect is near impossible to tell unless you know the specific terms of AMD sales to CPQ/IBM. Even then there is a fudge factor for guessing the number of coupons redeemed.

There is finite window before Intel can muddy the waters with CuMine. AMD need to establish quickly at the highend so that they can get a good chunk of the market for Christmas. If they have to make sweetheart deals to make it happen. So be it. Overall, I see it is something that should benefit AMD.

Yougang - Re: 'Look like this refund is AMD's responsibility to bear. Aside from big disount to OEMs like IBM and CPQ, AMD has to give out another 100 bucks if Athlon machine owners chose to send the refund request to AMD. Since the ratio of refund is hard to predict, the real Athlon ASP should be negatively impacted, but how much would be? Are they going to assume that only 50% consumers care to seek refund?"

Gee - this sounds too good to be true !

AMd is going to REALLY RAKE in the PROFITS when they honor ALL THOSE REBATES !

Let's see....if a Million PCs are sold, that's a $100 Million Rebate !

That's almost as good as AMD's Class Action Settlements !
