Pardon me, but to say that America was not established as a Christian nation forces me to ask you, what about the Puritians and the Father of our Country, George Washington?

The Puritans were certainly Christians by any reasonable definition, and were part of the mix -- but remember the timeframes involved between the Puritans and the Revolution.

George Washington was publicly a "Deist" as were many in those days; it was not safe to profess atheism -- that was the point of "freedom from religion". But, you would not recognize his faith as Christianity -- he professed belief in a "unifying force in nature", and in his private writings clearly did not hold with the idea of a personal God.

As I said, many state leaders (Continental Congress) at the time of the Revolution were Deists. Certainly some were Christian as well, but many of the United States heroes of the time were what you might call stark raving atheists such as myself. Sadly, they were not successful in eliminating religious persecution, and the man who wrote "Give me liberty or give me death" had his liberty taken away from him because he proclaimed his atheism.

Remember that then as now, most people who were actually atheists did not announce this, and the ones who did still caught a lot of flak.

Few who know me, as a moral and upstanding businessperson of high integrity (forgive the immodesty but I am making a point), are aware of my non-Christianity and certainly assume the opposite. So, while I never lie if asked, it rarely comes up in conversation. You could say that I was not an "evangelically witnessing" atheist.<g>

It is no longer possible to elect a known atheist President, but may be again one day. I am all for tolerance, and I believe that the office of President should be held by someone of the highest moral fiber. They can even be religious, as long as they have character.<g>
