Tony & Intel Investors - More details on Intel's Mobile Coppermine Launch - to occur on October 25'th along with the DeskTop version. "As is the norm, the usual cast of PC makers will be on hand at the launch to release notebooks based on the chips. " Kinda reminds you of an AMD processor launch - doesn't it ????!!!! Paul {==============================} Notebooks get a charge By Carmen Nobel, PC Week October 3, 1999 9:00 PM PT URL: zdnet.com Notebooks will inch ever closer to desktop PC parity this month as Intel Corp. rolls out its most powerful mobile processors to date. The Santa Clara, Calif., company on Oct. 25 is expected to launch its 400MHz, 450MHz and 500MHz mobile Pentium III processors that are built using the 0.18-micron process and include 256KB of on-die cache. As is the norm, the usual cast of PC makers will be on hand at the launch to release notebooks based on the chips. NEC Computer Systems Division, in Mountain View, Calif., for example, on Nov. 1 will introduce three Pentium III notebooks—the Versa FX, VX and LXi—that weigh less than 4 pounds. The FX uses a 400MHz Pentium III processor, weighs 3.5 pounds, and has external floppy and CD-ROM drives, according to sources close to the company. It includes a 12.1-inch TFT (thin-film transistor) display, an internal 56K-bps modem, 64MB of RAM, three USB (Universal Serial Bus) ports, a 6GB or 12GB hard drive, and power-on password capability. Pricing will range from $2,200 to $3,000, sources said. The VX is a so-called build-to-order notebook that users can configure when ordering and ranges in price from $1,799 to $3,599. All models include a 12.1-inch TFT display, a three-module chassis and two PC Card bus slots. Processor options range from a Celeron to the 500MHz Pentium III. The LXi, designed as a desktop replacement, features a 14.1- or 15-inch TFT display. It uses exclusively the 500MHz Pentium III with 256MB of Level 2 cache and is upgradable to 256MB of RAM. Pricing ranges from about $3,200 to $3,600, sources said. NEC officials declined to comment on unannounced products. Acer America Corp., in San Jose, Calif., on Oct. 25 will announce two new TravelMate notebooks based on the Pentium III, said sources close to the company. The TravelMate 340 is a 4-pound, all-in-one model that runs up to a 500MHz Pentium III. The TravelMate 730 includes a 450MHz or 500MHz Pentium III, a 15-inch LCD display, and a video chip powered with MPEG-2 and 8MB of video memory. The 340 is due next month and will cost less than $3,000. The 730 is due in January; pricing was not yet available. Acer officials declined to comment.
