It's a technology demonstration.

"The prototype uses C-Cube's DVxplore(TM) and ZiVA-3(TM) MPEG-2 encode and decode silicon as well as Samsung's DVD-RAM drive and system design technology."

That is confusing. "ZiVA-3(TM) MPEG-2 encode and decode silicon"
ZiVA doesn't encode.

It could mean it's a two part demo. Recorder to player.
The prototype DVD recorder box uses DVxplore. It means nothing (to me at least) unless it can play back in a current off the shelf DVD player.
If I were doing the demo I would pick a current DVD player like a Samsung 901(?) which has a Cube ZiVA DVD decoder in it....

Remember Cube demonstrated it in this manner at WinHec. Record it, walk over to the off the shelf player put it in and play it.

We need more details.

IMHO: This won't be available at reasonable consumer price points until Christmas 2001.
Sure it might be available next year but it'll cost you...
