Titanium also carries with it the cachet of being expensive. I used to buy little titanium parts for my bicycle and boy they weren't cheap!

Excellent choice.

Since everyone else is raving about the name, I guess I'll throw in my dissenting opinion.

I personally don't like the name. At least "Pentium" was familiar to people (Pentagon, etc). "Itanium" seems totally contrived, doesn't roll off the tongue, is confusing on pronunciation, and looks funny in print. If there is an implied message in the name it's so obscure as to be worthless. A four-syllable name was the best they could come up with for a processor? "Athlon" may be totally contrived, but it's easy to say and there's no confusion on the pronunciation. I give "Itanium" a "C" at best and it more likely deserves a "D".

That said, the name won't mean diddly once the product ships.

<"Titanium" has terrific marketability..> ...
Yeah right! And great association with the
doom of "Titanic" :)
So, the boarding is completed, waiting for
iceberg to show up? IMO, it's already here :)
