I suggest everyone take a look at the following Power 99 reading material, the link to which was provided courtesy of a Yahoo threadster:arthurdlittle.com It contains Acrobat files, within which contains such notes tidbits as: Mobile and portable device growth curves. Summarized notes from a roundtable discussion of the following nature: General Trends Rapid changes in energy/power demands- no stability -Cellphones long standby time and lower power for transmit -Portable computers increasing in peak power and energy needs. Consumer computing/communications products creating cost and ease of use challenges The increasing role of package design, size, and weight as means to discriminate/offer competitive advantage The need to do early overall system design to make best use of battery energy. The whole system and architecture need to be matched to the unique capabilities of the cells/pack Starting List of Issues 1) Cost of Li-Polymer packs considering the cost of the cells and all the associated electronics 2) The proliferation of sizes and shapes- impact on new product design as well as after-the-sale stocking replacements 3) Need to design products to accommodate multiple battery chemistries- impact on the cost of the host product electronics. 4) Is there a need to form strategic relationships between cell supplier and product OEM. In the past you can buy a standard battery on an arms length basis, but now there may be value in co developments. What does this mean for both parties. For the product OEM a commitment to buy from a single supplier at a specific price for some period of time, for the battery supplier an agreement not to sell to competition for some period of time. 5) Dealing with safety issues by ?unlicensed? pack manufacturers, need for certification, technical barriers 6) Where is the end of the line for notebook computers, the energy as well as peak power requirements keep going up. Is there a major architecture shift moving forward... ------ And on, and on, and on. It's an interesting, and worth while read for those trying to glean the future potential of the portable, mobile device industry, not the least of which is that sectors energy demands/requirements.
