I agree, 10,000 could be a poor estimate, but the evidence does seem to suggest that the earth isn't as old as evolution would require it to be. However with a creatonist viewpoint, then possibly when God created rocks and things the set of laws which governed amount of carbon isotopes in rocks and things such as this, could have been vastly different. and similarly with stars, etc. how can one say that life has been evolving but only look at our small history within the universe to guess as to how the earth was before.

And although this would seem strange God might have created the earth with a geological and astronomical history. I couldn't even begin to guess at Gods motive for this, but it is a possibility. Actually I will begin to guess (just for the sake of discussion), maybe he wanted to make belief in him an act of faith, rather than of science, becuase if God could be proven then it would destroy the meaning of faith in him...? just a guess, and probably a bad one, but it does raise a point. :-)
