What an interesting (and critical) polemic to awaken too. As I am going out, I can only set down a few of my thoughts. I think it is fascinating that SI has determined to try the experiment of democracy. Certainly, SI is become a world community with everything from coffee shops to drug stores; with representation from everyone from the local blacksmith to the village wag. Those that say democracy is a dangerous precedent are at least half right: This does appear to be a precedent in the cyberworld; but it is not dangerous simply because it is a precedent. Indeed, most precedents are progressive and advancing of the human journey. To expel a former citizen forever , from his/her tribe and people, is a punishment that on the face of it (congratulations Solon--no latin) appears rather harsh. I wish I had the time this morning for a Manifesto, as I think this is an extremely important subject. It is unfortunate that there is a lack of specific information regarding the alleged unsuitability of A@P to live (and dwell)in our SI society. Thus, the argument at this point (for the most part) needs to be generic and general. I will, however, state this publicly: I did vote; and it was a private one, as votes ought to be. I do not think abrasiveness (nor even arrogance) is sufficient cause to expel a citizen from his people forever; so these types of statements ought to be dismissed as being irrelevant to this argument. I must say, however, that I personally found Anthony to be a worthwhile citizen with much to offer the community. All of us have offended the community, and sometimes we need to be chastised. The switch from dictatorship to democracy is a delicate move fraught with many uncertainties during the transition. It is expected, therefore, that this attempt should meet with a lot of strong feelings. I think that many of the comments being made are really attempts to address that issue rather than the actual specifics regarding the worthiness of anthony to return to the village where he was once a respected (if controversial) elder statesman.
