Did he positively say these were .18um K7s?

Charles - <P.S.: I would like to hear from process guys why it would take AMD 3 quarters for to go into production if they already have working K7 from the fab. Why so long?>

Excellent question. Probably because MOT isn't even shipping .18 Copper yet, despite their PR to the contrary.

Chuck,

- Motherboard situation was worse than I thought it was. Its a shame that they couldn't ship the other 100-150k units.

I think the Mobo situation will get better in the next 4 to 5 weeks as new Mobo manufacturers start releasing their boards for Athlon. ASUS boards are already on sale in Europe. They use AMD's System Controller(Norht Bridge) and the Peripheral Controller(South Bridge) chips, so any chipset shortage from Via won't impede their production. Also noticed the following info @JC's site -
"FIC, according to KH's Taiwanese sources, is targeting to grab 30% of the Athlon DIY market. Their main focus for the rest of the year will be the Slot-A boards. And there's been more talk that a taiwanese motherboard maker came forth and confirmed Socketed EV-6 boards for later Athlons."

Goutama

I'm not a process expert, and I hope you don't mind me responding to your question.

First off, the Cu K7s are from AMD's Research Labs. To commence production at Dresden, they have to go through process transfer, characterization and validation steps. Next, according to the CC reports I have read, Sanders mentioned that K7 initial production in Q2'00 and revenues in H2'00. So, you are actually looking at two quarters before the start of K7 initial production. Also, Fab25 is running at only 80% capacity, and has enough capacity available to meet their Q1'00 K7 units projection and more. I suspect that they may start K6-2+ production at Dresden before K7. I was surprised that no one raised any questions about K6-2+ in the CC.

Goutama

Chuckles,

Re: "I would like to hear from process guys why it would take AMD 3 quarters
for to go into production if they already have working K7 from the fab.
Why so long?"

I've been warning you about the Copper yield and process maturity issues
for some time now. AMD announced a year ago that K7's from Dresden would
be by the end of '99. Now it will be late next year ... BTW, Copper
isn't even needed for performance at .18um. What a "bonehead" move.
