The "sides" had to do with the pro vs con Reagan. You are trying to justify the personal insults to E on the basis of her insults to an idea, or class of believers in an idea. The folks submitting the competing idea were equally insulting to the believers in E's idea- but they leapt to personalize it against E- and E did not do that. I grant you it requires a certain appreciation of nuance to perceive this- but if you look back on it I am sure you will see it.
