Donald,

I checked with freight handler friend, he said that has been the case for quite awhile. He cannot tell me statistically whether the imbalance is worse than before.

In either case, I am not sure how accurate an indicator that may be for measuring CHANGES in trade deficits.

I find it interesting that not much attention is paid to the strong yen last qtr. That should have been good profit for US companies exporting to Japan but could be a killer for Japan Inc. this quarter. How much longer can Jpn talk themselves out of their recession?

My Company imports heavy machinery from Europe. Since Mid September we have been paying a surcharge of 100 US$ for every container going west. Reason: the vessel is empty going back east

<<And I will add that most of that 60% was
wastepaper and cheap chemical>>
Don,
he also mentioned that India is one of their stops. That is probably where the waste paper is headed. Waste(recycled) paper is used to make paper in India.
