What is interesting is not so much the color as the principle.

The sub-$500 PC is not so interesting to us consumers any more. "I got a really great deal on a PC" - Yea, well, so did we all. One of those square grey ones right?

As prices of systems drop below $500 the emphasis switches to differentiation on function, even aesthetics. One aspect of this is the attraction of megahertz, not really because we need the speed but just because we like the gofaster label.

What could make a difference to CPU sales as a result of this switch is that dual processor systems will sell like hot cakes when a consumer version of Windows finally supports MP. Wanna come over and put my dual Athlon 1500 through its paces? (On second thoughts, perhaps not!)

Kash, re:<AMD getting colorfull:>

This is great News. Even better than the two upgrades you and AJ posted. It would have grabbed all the attention; if they just had a production system ready, and displayed it during the CC. I like AMD's attitude.

Regards,
Goutama

<Quite an interesting move:AMD gets into the color PC mode
By Michael Kanellos>

This definitely is interesting. Looks like AMD is giving some serious thought to how to win at the low end. Wonder if this is a Comdex release.

Now, let's see if the plans payoff at the retail counter.

Kash I found the following most interesting by far,

"The oval system was actually commissioned by AMD, he stated. The company owns the design and is licensing it to PC manufacturers on the condition that they use K6-2 chips inside it."

AMD is now into designing stylish boxes, LOL. Now I am very curious to see what these boxes look like. It would be worth a trip to the zoo (Fry's).

I also wonder if any company will follow Packard Bell and use the design. I can's see Compaq or IBM doing it but maybe Nextar or NEC.
