Cabletron Systems to Showcase Key Elements of Convergence Strategy At Telecoms '99, Geneva
Live Voice-Over-IP and Virtual Private Networking Demonstrations Available Throughout Telecoms
ROCHESTER, N.H.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 7, 1999-- Cabletron Systems (NYSE:CS - news) today announced the availability of live Voice-over-IP (VoIP) and Virtual Private Networking (VPN) demonstrations throughout the Geneva Telecoms '99 exhibition, enabling visitors to view real-life convergence technology in action.

''Cabletron Systems consistently lead new technology development, and in the areas of voice and VPN solutions, we are again showing our skills as an industry leader; not only talking about these solutions, but allowing customers to utilize them in real world environments. Users want to listen to how voice-over-IP works vs. a traditional phone and, at Geneva Telecoms, they will have the opportunity to do just that.'' Said Ray Wright, director of marketing - convergence, Cabletron Systems.

With IDC's recent prediction for voice becoming the Internet's ''killer app'', users are seeking reliable, scalable, VoIP solutions that can meet the demands placed by bandwidth-hungry applications. Quality of Service (QoS), traffic prioritization, and bandwidth monitoring are all critical requirements for most users and, via Cabletron's SmartVoice Solution, these features are deliverable today.

Demonstrating live at Telecoms '99, Geneva, Cabletron's SmartVoice Solution combine voice and fax traffic (via IP) onto a single LAN or WAN data network infrastructure, resulting in reduced intra-company voice costs. Cost savings can be up to 80% off regular long distance tariffs.

When united with Cabletron's industry-leading SmartSwitch Router (SSR), the SmartVoice Gateway (SVG) connects to traditional analog phones, fax machines, key systems and/or digital PBXs. It generates dial tone, performs call setup, samples and compresses voice/fax streams, packetizes them into IP/UDP, and transports them via Ethernet across a data backbone (IP, FR or ATM).

In addition, Cabletron will demonstrate their key SmartVPN solution, designed to enable customers to take advantage of the wide area bandwidth cost-reductions associated with VPN technology. SmartVPN provides a high-performance infrastructure for ensuring secure links across the Internet and additional IP networks. Cabletron's family of small business focused SmartSwitch Routers (SSRs) are central to the demonstration and will enable visitors to Cabletron's booth to view true scalability, security, QoS and manageability.

Cabletron's SmartVPN solutions prove extremely favorable for Internet Service Providers (ISPs) seeking to offer scalable, VPN services over the Internet. In addition, it allows enterprise customers to enjoy cost-effective, site-to-site connections with end-to-end encryption and authentication.
