On the jobs data: The question is, I believe, What part does the hurricane play in the data? Did it reduce employment temporarily? Was there very little effect?

Since the long term trend reflects tighter employment, until the hurricane question can be answered, it must be assumed that the long term trend is still in force at this time.

The Canadian jobs data, out yesterday, indicated another significant drop in unemployment here to a level commensurate with that of 1990. The trend appears to remain intact in the True North.

Ciao,
David Todtman

Wally: I have posted this before and I think the market is finally getting it. The non farm payrolls make NO DIFFERENCE at this point. Why? Because there are not enough willing and able bodied workers around to hire. The jobs go unfilled and so they cannot be "created." The only thing that matters is the wage increases. They are not good. Greenspan is going to jack the rates. Only question is when. Right now it looks like November. But Abby said the market already discounted this rate rise. No way.

I went to Walmart's the other night at my better half's request. I hate shopping and I hate Walmart. But that is another story. Anyway, the freakin lines were to the back of the store. They did not have enough cashiers because they could not find them. It was our cashier's first day on the job. And she was doing the best she could but they left her all alone the first day and she obviously needed help. But there was nobody there to help her because there was a shortage of managers. All night long, employees were paging managers to come fix a problem. But she was left on the line all alone. And this wasn't even Christmas. And it was a week night. People were loading up on crap. I hate shopping and I hate crap!!
