Speaking of jobs...and PCs - IBM plans job cuts in PC unit

ARMONK, N.Y. - IBM, the world's largest computer maker, says it's
cutting 5% to 10% of its 10,000-person personal computer unit to reduce
expenses in the money-losing division. Some of the workers will be
reassigned to other business units, the company said. IBM is merging its
consumer and business PC operations to further cut costs. IBM lost almost
$1 billion last year in its PC business as it cut inventory and farmed out some
assembly duties to distributors to compete better with Dell Computer, the
biggest direct seller of PCs. IBM's PC unit lost $153 million before taxes in
the second quarter.

you should probably go look at the little Mom n Pop stores and see how long the lines are before you jump to conclusions.

You MAY be right, but consumers may be switching to low price faster than we get closures in small stores with good service. A checker at WalMart may handle the dollar volume in an hour that a Mom n Pop store might do in a day (if lucky).

Related Thought:
I visited the WalMart on the MountainView / Los Altos CA border this week. I was in a long line as you mentioned but it was the Noon hour. What was interesting is on the Corners along El Camino Real RIGHT NEXT TO WALMART were about 50 day laborours hanging out waiting to get a job. Usually gardeners pick them up to clear the land, cut trees, etc. in Los Altos Hills and other high priced areas. IT strikes me every time that they might prefer a regular job inside the nice WalMart store with health care...they just need a little green card.

Excellent post Justa,

I agree that shortage of people willing and able to work is the key to low payroll number. A major furniture manufacturer in my town is reporting lower profits because they can't find people to build the furniture (plenty of orders-- they just aren't being filled). Raising wages will only cannabalize the pool of people already working elsewhere as all able-bodied people are already employed.

As a barometer, I use the proportion of times my fast food orders get screwed up at the drive-through window. It seems fast food chains can't find workers to fill those jobs and my barometer suggests they are going to have to train subhuman species to do the job soon.

best...
