Off topic.

Hi William:

Something foolish I did recently was join MyEvents.com and move all my information from Outlook to their Calendar. They were mentioned by Forbes as the best Virtual Secretary. So I figured it's time to move to a server/net centric model. Everything worked fine for 2 months and suddenly on Thursday when I go to use my Calendar and I can't get in. I waited few hours before I sent an email. Here is the 1st response I got:

""Hello,

Our co-location facility experienced a problem early this morning that is preventing user access to MyEvents. We have our engineers working with the facility engineers to remedy the problem. We are terribly sorry for the inconvenience this has caused you, but expect to see everything back to normal within the hour.""

Two days later, I emailed again. This time they are offering me a T-shirt for the inconvenience:

""We experienced a backup data error which affected some of our users who have joined in the last few weeks or created a group. We are working with our vendors to attempt recovery...yet we have not received any guarantees. At this time, it may be easiest for you to rejoin and establish your group.

Please accept our apologies for this inconvenience. We will do
everything we can do to help you with this. In the meantime, let us send you a t-shirt for your troubles. If you are interested, please send me your size and address.

Thanks,
MyEvents.com

This episode reminded me of conversations you and I had back in 1996 right here on SI on the reliability of web/server-centric models. I recall you saying something like "our posts will be right here on SI for many years to come ...". MyEvents.com was my first attempt to use this model for crucial information. Well, it hasn't been a pleasant experience to say the least.

Hope all is well with you.

take care,

Techie
