From what I recall from the A&E special last year, he was flying a fighter bomber. Like the tomcats now but a lot less advanced. The anti-aircraft shot the shit out of his rear end. He stayed with the plane longer than he should to let his crew bail. Communications were gone so he didn't know the crew were dead. After the carrier was out of range he finally bailed. A sub that no one knew about was trailing the convoy and picked him up. He was then transferred to the fighter wing.

And no sir, I wasn't there. I wasn't born. On the other hand A & E does a pretty good job on being neutral and giving the facts.
