Naval fighters at this stage were Wildcats with Hellcats and Corsairs coming on. It is not very important, but amidst the welter of military self-promotion by politicians the idea that Bush was "the youngest fighter pilot" is a self-promoting hoax. It is possible he was the "youngest naval aviator" but I would need some evidence even of that. I have no problem with Bush -- just his being there is enough for me and everyone else, I believe. It must really have teed him off listening to Reagan fantasize about his war experiences whenever Bush was allowed to come up from the basement.
