I remember getting e-mail messages from someone in an AOL chatroom in 1997 who was wiped out by that October fall. He turned $ 125,000 into $ 25,000 in three months, at first with call options at the top and then with put options at the bottom into $ 25,000. He was still trying to make it back with the options in late December when he started sending me e-mails. I had also heard about a neighbor of a friend who was wiped out in 1987 in options as well. Lost his family and his savings as a result.
