FranQ. Ref: Gemstar I visited my local Circuit City yesterday and tried out Guide+ in a 36" Sony. It was OK, but nothing special is its present configuration. Also, I noted that the three advertising spaces on the left side of the screen were being used for a PIP, a TV program promo, and a top 50 music listing. Somehow I don't think this usage was generating advertising revenues--or at least very little. Do you know if there exists a more advanced program than Guide+ in those areas with cable modems or is all of that future stuff.

Confirmation of Gemstar's simian nature will have to await their next few quarterly reports. We will need to look closely at value chain formation, revenue growth and gross margin.

Having read Tornado and having always been bewildered by the lack of quantifiable definition of a tornado in Game, my criteria in the future will be slightly less focused on revenue growth and gross margins. Instead, I'll be trying to focus more on the functionality of the bowling alley and tornado strategies. As an example, realizing now that consumer product companies need to use horizontal marketing, implications about the bowling alley for them are far less important than for other companies.

By the way, the utter dominance of the EPG space by the new and improved TV Guide tells me that Gemstar is now a gorilla. I realize that it's an early call, but I don't see any competitors with similar technology capable of unseating the lock on the market. The value chain of the old TV Guide combined with the value chain of Gemstar is IMMENSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry for that bit of exuberance, but I've been in withdrawal, away from you folks for two weeks. :)
