I got a question. I noticed that the satellite guys (GMH and DISH) seemed to solve one of their big problems today with the first successful sea launch. Now their launch pad is the Pacific Ocean and it costs a lot less as well (less people overhead costs).

As I recall, satellites can download at 1,000 Mbps which is far faster than HFC but far less than FTTH.

One of the big drawbacks to satellite was that they had no uplink for your average KU band dish. Now, as I understand, the hardware guys have managed to make a 56K transponder they can put on the dishes. The use of these interactive systems is scheduled for Q2 (which is why AOL forked over 1.5 billion). I think both GMH and DISH will start offering interactive internet in this manner then.

What do you think about this?

In the state that I live its enormous... a widespread problem. I once heard that 30% of the US population was outside a direct CO serving area. This number is extremely questionable but provides an order of magnitude for the real problem DSL faces.
