Aus and Thread - This just in.

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 11, 1999--SanDisk Corp. (Nasdaq:SNDK) announced today that it will supply PenMan Corp., a Korean consumer electronics company, with its MultiMediaCard for use in PenMan's NETTi PN-2000 MP3 portable internet music player.

In addition to playing music, the NETTi PN-2000 has a large LCD displaying lyrics to songs for Karaoke use. The device also acts as a personal educator by displaying the text of voice lectures.

The NETTi can be utilized by a wide range of consumers for self-learning of various topics with features such as repeat, search, referencing, browsing and the programmability of RealLecture(TM) letting users improve their knowledge at their own speed.

Embedded real voice dictionary and word games such as WordMan and LetterMan are optional.

"The NETTi is a fantastic tool for child education as well as adults learning a new language," said Dong-Joo Kim, president of PenMan Corp.

"With the use of additional storage such as SanDisk's MultiMediaCard, we are able to increase the functionality of a handheld device from a portable music player to a personal educator. SanDisk's MultiMediaCard is the ideal solution for our NETTi player/educator since it is physically very small and requires little power."

Nelson Chan, vice president of marketing at SanDisk, said, "Our MultiMediaCard has increased the functionality of several new handheld products. As we increase the capacity of our MultiMediaCard, we expect to see more functionality in the palm of every consumer's hand.

"PenMan has proven that our ability to increase functionality in portable devices with removable flash memory has impacted the marketplace by sparking a convergence of multiple devices."

The PenMan NETTi PN-2000 weighs 2.8 ounces, is powered by two "AAA" batteries, and measures 2.48 x 3.74 x .59 inches. Each NETTi PN-2000 has two specific slots for SanDisk MultiMediaCards. Availability of the NETTi PN-2000 is scheduled for November and will be sold worldwide. The price has not been determined, but is expected to be under US $200.

SanDisk MultiMediaCards are currently being used to store digitally compressed MP3 music in over 20 portable internet music players. SanDisk MultiMediaCards are available at over 11,000 retail outlets worldwide in capacities ranging between 4 and 30 megabytes.

Apparently this news is bearish? (SNDK trading near 57)

On Sam's comments about the language in the PEP, it appears that it must be made not only simple enough for people who aren't lawyers, but also those, lawyers or not, working for the SEC. Maybe THAT'S the real clinker.
