Novellus was the first front-end semi equip to report this quarter. They had an outstanding quarter, and the reasons that were given for this success are mainly sector-wide trends. IMO these are likely to impact nicely on Mattson's report later this month.

In the following excerpt from Novellus' report, note the mention of "capacity buys" which is important because Mattson is more heavily dependent on these than most front-end semi-equips:

Bookings in the third quarter of 1999 were the highest
recorded in the company's history and exceeded a 1:1 book-to-bill
ratio for the fourth consecutive quarter.
"Record bookings highlighted the quarter in which revenue, net
income and cash generation showed continued improvement," said Richard
Hill, chairman and chief executive officer. "The semiconductor
industry appears to be in the early stages of a broad-based recovery,
inventories are low and demand is seen across all product types,
especially telecommunications and consumer electronics. Bookings and
earnings strength are attributable to both capacity and technology
buys of our core products."
