Helix Reports Sharply Higher Third Quarter Earnings

MANSFIELD, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 14, 1999--Helix
Technology Corporation (NASDAQ NMS symbol:HELX) today announced net
income for the third quarter ended October 1, 1999, of $4.8 million,
or $0.21 per share, compared to a net loss of $3.4 million, or ($0.15)
per share in the third quarter of 1998. Sales for the third quarter of
1999 were $39.0 million compared with $18.6 million in 1998.
Net income for the nine months ended October 1, 1999, was $9.0
million, or $0.40 per share, compared with a net loss of $2.0 million,
or ($0.09) per share, for 1998. Sales for the nine-month period were
$97.5 million in 1999 versus $75.8 million in 1998.
Commenting on the results, Helix President, Robert J. Lepofsky,
said, "Revenues in the third quarter of 1999 were 20% higher than in
the second quarter of 1999. Net income in the third quarter of 1999
was up 60% compared to the immediately preceding quarter. We recorded
strong order booking trends throughout the quarter in each of our
Product Centers. With the rapid recovery in the global semiconductor
capital equipment market, we and our customers are seeing the benefits
inherent in our extremely short cycle time approach to operations. The
combination of an excellent external market environment and the
favorable response to our newer products from both end-users and OEM
accounts suggests to us that we will continue to see positive
performance gains in the quarters ahead."
