>Why did they launch this massive campaign? Was it really to "wipe out the terrorists"? IMHO, to a large degree, yes it was. These bandits invaded Izhigestan <sp?> and stated that they want to establish a separate state. Too many kidnappings and criminal activities continued to be perpetrated by them. Then the bombings (still not sure if they did them)...Russians had to make a stand and say" "Enough is enough, we will destroy you and we'll use Nato's tactics which legitimized the deliberate targeting of civilian targets"... >Will they be The terrorists are a relatively small group, and surely there must have been better (and cheaper) ways of going after them. effective... I kind of doubt it, time will tell. >Was it to exact vengeance (as distinct from retribution), to punish the whole people for the crimes of a few? The final straw. >Was it really just planned as a "short victorious war," designed to deflect public attention from money scandals, etc., etc.? Yes, undoubtedly that was a factor too. >The terrorists are a relatively small group, and surely there must have been better (and cheaper) ways of going after them. What other better/cheaper AND effective ways are there to eliminate these fanatics? They know where they are, bomb the hell out of them, drive out the civilians, close in and bomb them to pieces...once and for all. Who knows in the meantime they can try out some new weapons to advertize them... Personally, I think the Chechens have proved to be a formidable fighting force which will probably get the best out of young and unmotivated Russian forces as time goes by... I also think if the Russians close in on the militants with a few civilians around they may just nuke them. Farfetched?
