PairGain Continues Successful G.Lite Interoperability Testing
Company also Receives No. 1 Ranking in Worldwide DSL Modem Shipments from Dataquest
TUSTIN, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 18, 1999--PairGain® Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: PAIR - news), a leader in DSL access systems, today announced the company's successful multi-vendor G.Lite interoperability tests now include Analog Devices, Inc.; Aware, Inc.; Centillium Communications, Inc.; Conexant Systems, Inc.; Globespan, Inc.; and ITeX (Integrated Telecom Express, Inc.). Recent interoperability testing included full rate ADSL, as well as G.Lite configurations. PairGain's Avidia® System integrated DSL access switch demonstrated interoperability with customer premises equipment (CPE) prototypes from each company, while PairGain's Megabit Modems® demonstrated compatibility with central office (CO) prototypes.

In addition, PairGain achieved interoperability with Lucent Technologies Microelectronics Group's client modem chip set solution in June of this year and with CO and CPE evaluation modules from Texas Instruments last January. The testing confirms that G.Lite and high-performance ADSL connections can be implemented using different products from a variety of vendors. PairGain's ongoing participation in the University of New Hampshire's Interoperability Lab, coupled with these multi-vendor interoperability demonstrations reaffirms the company's strong commitment to providing customers with the widest variety of G.Lite standards-compliant CO and CPE solutions available.

''The promise of G.Lite is being realized, and continued multi-vendor interoperability work is going to make DSL service deployment much easier for our customers, particularly with respect to customer premises equipment,'' said Kevin Woods, director of marketing for PairGain's Avidia Networks business unit. ''Multi-vendor development and testing is healthy for DSL, because it will ultimately give customers more competitive solutions. The cooperation between partners and competitors alike has been remarkable.''

The interoperability achieved by PairGain and the other G.Lite vendors will help drive applications such as IP voice calls over the Internet, real-time streaming data, distance learning, video and multimedia to the consumer. Achieving this milestone equals opportunity for all participating companies, as the commercial availability of G.Lite draws nearer.

PairGain and Conexant are exclusive partners in the development of ADSL/G.Lite solutions based on PairGain's FALCON(TM) chip technology.

North American Market Share Leader

In a related note, PairGain was named the 1998 leader in the North American DSL CPE market by Dataquest in its Worldwide xDSL Market Share and Forecast published July 12. PairGain ranked first in North American DSL modem shipments with 18 percent of the market. With successful G.Lite testing, PairGain is poised to capitalize in this emerging space, too.

The comprehensive report includes statistics for ADSL, SDSL and IDSL equipment manufacturers in North America and worldwide. PairGain is listed among the top three equipment manufacturers in six categories and the top six manufacturers in two additional categories, demonstrating the company's breadth of products and depth of DSL experience.

The largest growth area for DSL is broadband access in the last mile. PairGain's leadership across a variety of categories, especially in the CPE space, indicates the company already has substantial mind share in this high-growth segment.

''We're proud to be listed among the DSL market leaders in such a wide variety of categories,'' said Mike Pascoe, president and CEO of PairGain. ''This is a positive indicator for the Avidia System, because it will serve many of these DSL applications going forward.''

PairGain uses ADSL and SDSL technology in its Avidia® System, Megabit Modems® and Campus(TM) products. The company shipped 40,200 modems in 1998 and 1997 to lead the CPE space.

The Dataquest report shows that DSL CPE product shipments totaled 350,800 in 1998 and states, ''the market ramp up could be much faster starting in late 1999.''

PairGain's largest installed base of DSL, the HiGain® family of HDSL products, is not even counted in the Dataquest report. However, the recent Ryan Hankin Kent (RHK) Loop Access Systems 1998 Report ranked the company No. 1 with a 57 percent market share of North American HDSL sales in 1998. In addition, the company recorded consecutive record quarters in HiGain shipments in Q1 and Q2 of 1999, shipping more than 237,000 units combined. PairGain's overall installed base of DSL nodes exceeds 1.5 million worldwide.
