Mr. Jim Carter of Syncrude reports
Syncrude Canada gas inked a multi-million dollar deal with Finning International to purchase eight of the world's largest mining trucks for operation at the Aurora project, scheduled to start production in May, 2000.
The CAT 797 380-ton mining truck will be the largest of its kind in the world and Syncrude will be one of the first companies to have it in full-scale operation. Syncrude expects to have over 80 large mining trucks in operation at both Syncrude's Base mine lease and Aurora lease within 10 years.
Syncrude has been a key collaborator with Caterpillar on the development of the 380-ton truck since 1994. As a development partner, Syncrude has leased a fleet of six trucks to test long-term production capability, durability and maintenance in an oil sands mine, considered one of the toughest mining environments. In addition to increased fuel efficiency and lower exhaust emissions, among the newest innovations in the larger model are two 12-cylinder engines coupled together to create a 3400 horsepower engine and a wireless vital information management system which allows the customer to remotely analyze data on truck performance. Unique to Syncrude trucks will be video cameras mounted on the side and rear axle to allow the driver to monitor activity behind the vehicle when backing up.
Jim Carter, Syncrude president and chief operating officer, expects the 380-ton trucks will prove to have the right ingredients for successful operations at the $900-million Aurora project. "At Syncrude, we are always looking at how we can increase production, lower our operating costs and increase operational efficiency. And in this case, bigger is better. The 380-ton truck delivers on all of it. We're proud to have worked as a partner with Caterpillar on the development of the 380-ton unit and have agreed to be the first site to test the 400-ton units as well."
One of the strategic plans in the $6-billion Syncrude 21 expansion, the Aurora project is set to open in May, 2000. Syncrude 21 also includes the North mine, a two-stage de-bottleneck of the upgrading plant and the upgrader expansion. These projects will be designed and constructed over the next 10 years and, as these projects are brought on line, operating costs are forecast to be in the range of $11 to $12 per barrel. Crude oil production will increase to 94 million barrels per year in 2001 and double to 175 million barrels per year in the 2007 to 2010 time frame.
Syncrude Canada Ltd. is the world's largest oil sands operation and the second largest producer of crude oil in Canada. The Syncrude project is a joint venture operated by Syncrude Canada Ltd. and owned by AEC Oil Sands, LP, AEC Oil Sands Limited Partnership, Athabasca Oil Sands Investments Inc., Canadian Occidental Petroleum Ltd., Canadian Oil Sands Investments Inc., Gulf Canada Resources Limited, Imperial Oil Resources, Mocal Energy Ltd., Murphy Oil Company Ltd. and Petro-Canada.

Y2K and North America Text are of interest, here is part:
<<..Construction of the second mining train in the North Mine project was completed and is currently being commissioned, almost two months ahead of schedule. Significant progress also has been made on the Aurora Mine and Debottleneck II projects where construction is advancing ahead of schedule and under budget. As a result, start-up of the Aurora project is now expected to be in May 2000, instead of the original estimate of July.

CONVENTIONAL HEAVY OIL

The recent increase in average heavy oil prices, from $9.31 per barrel at the end of 1998 to $16.65 per barrel in the second quarter, has greatly improved the economic environment in this sector. Quarterly production was approximately 1,200 boe/d lower than the first quarter as a result of increased water cuts and a decrease in service activity in the Plover and Coleville areas due to wet conditions.

Gulf asigned a Partnership Agreement with PanCanadian Petroleum Limited on June 15 to form a new heavy oil partnership - Petrovera Resources (owned 46.7 per cent by Gulf). Gulf contributed approximately 17,000 boe/d of production and will retain an equal share of the decision-making ability. Petrovera's current focus is to identify ways to optimize the operating cost synergies of the combined companies and to maximize total asset value.

THERMAL/UPGRADING PROJECTS

Production from the Surmont and Kerrobert thermal pilot projects continues to meet expectations, with average quarterly production of 1,741 boe/d. The Alberta Energy and Utilities Board hearing regarding the shut-in of third party gas in the Surmont area is still in progress with no decision at this time.
