A clip from the Boeing News Today web page:

BOEING 717 HAS OPERATING ADVANTAGES OVER A318
British Airways may have selected the A318 over the Boeing 717 for commonality throughout its fleet, but the lower operating costs of the 717 can be just as valuable to an airline. In response to media, Boeing Marketing Vice President Randolph Baseler said the 717 is targeted to airlines that are very interested in trip costs - how much it costs to fly the plane around 300 to 500 nautical miles. The 717 is 17,000 pounds lighter - the equivalent of 80 200-pound passengers - and its trip costs are 10 percent lower than the A318. "To make up 10 percent with commonality, it can't be done,' Baseler said. There are orders for 115 Boeing 717s. Airbus has orders for 57 A318s, including the British Airways order.
