I think the bet had been magnified that day however, by adding on using large SnP positions. All in all the losses exceeded 400 million as I recall. Either way, he certainly got pounded and I think they knew to pound him. At least that's what I heard from people who would have information like that. But it was a long time ago, the entire thing was shrouded in mystery anyway. Still, you have to wonder why the market rebounded spectacularly right after RefCo covered.
