This story is a strong reminder to all of us to keep in mind our fellow human beings. However, a couple of thoughts to keep in mind:

I stopped once to help a woman who appeared ill, asking if I could help. I suspect (I am not qualified to make a diagnosis) that she was schizophrenic. She began to scream that I was trying to kill her and hit me repeatedly until I could get far enough away that she once again lapsed into a reverie.

Many times I have offered a blind person my arm, particularly at a crossing--BTW, never take a blind person's arm or elbow; let the person rest his or her hand on your arm--most of the time, the people were glad of the assistance, but once I received hideous verbal abuse for the offer of assistance at a busy intersection.

There are reasons sometimes why people don't offer, even when they feel compassion.
