At Spring of 98 Fidelity sold very large stake in SUN Microsystem(SUNW).
It was after few months, where SUWN was trading in narrow range around 20.
SUWN was trading in this range for few more months and took off. Now 90+.
I am long holder of SUNW.
What we can say about Fidelity decision in this case?

, how can you possibly assert that someone is "absolutely wrong" for saying that Fidelity's sales of 1/2 their holdings doesn't reflect a lack of confidence in mgmt? I would suppose that its possible(though, only a very remote possibility) that they don't lack confidence, but, unless you personally know the fund managers and they have broken their confidentiality obligations in telling you something, how could you know this?????

I said he was absolutely wrong to assert Fidelity's sell of half their position meant they'd lost confidence in management. There are many reasons for selling, including not wanting to show a loss to investors. I went on to say holding half their position "indicates they're still behind the management team." My choice of words was deliberate. "Indicates" is not definitive. It shows it's one of many possibilities.

Furthermore, based on the number of shares FMR voted at the annual meeting, their sales were all done before the end of August. From earlier filings we know they sold 2.5 m by the first of June. And we now know 6.5 was sold from June to some time before the AGM.

I maintain that holding 8.6 million shares indicates they still have faith in the company. And I further maintain it cannot be construed as indicating anything negative. Yes, the sales are negative. But the reasons may have nothing to do with management.
