I seriously doubt that Microsoft will want to dirty its hands with hardware manufacturing. But I admit there is a small possibility that this will happen. In this case, Microsoft will be a direct competitor to the rest of the mobile phone industry and will start with a market share of low single digits.

I think that the Phone Division is going to Ericsson. I'm a block away from QCOM and there are Ericsson signs all over the place.

What if MSFT buys QCOM's handset division?

Highly unlikely since it would have difficulty clearing anti-trust concerns. Also, I think MSFT recently made a statement to the effect that they want to stay focused on software, in response, I believe, to such a question.
