From the 'Zen of Shorting' A sample from the collected works of the master short of ancient Japan, Chu Mei Ash. Chu Mei Ash frequently gave public lectures on the use of Zen in the stock market. Because of his market success and high profile as a short he was often attacked by longs. The following exchange occurred when he was shorting several saki companies. He was speaking to several of his students and a few individuals sitting in listening. "Master Chu Mei Ash," a heckler said, "I have been listening to you speak for several days now. I do not see you to be a follower of the great Buddha at all. I see you drinking saki, speaking of shorting and thus profiting at the loss of others, and failing to live a life by the precepts of Buddha." "Well, small maggot, perhaps you do not look deep enough. You may be like the dung beetle who lacks the senses to see beyond a few inches of earth around him. Indeed for the dung beetle Nirvana is rolling a ball of dung." "I am hardly a dung beetle!" replied the heckler. "I would most certainly agree, small maggot." said Chu Mei Ash, "For the dung beetle is correct, for as a dung beetle to have successfully rolled dung into a ball and built a nest is Nirvana or a step on the path. For the beetle has become one with his task. Is not the goat herder still a goat herder after enlightenment? There may seem to be no difference in the way he herds his goats, and yet there is. For he becomes one with his task. So too do I seek to become one with my task of shorting saki companies. I seek to let my preconceptions fall away. To become one with the market, to be one with the saki companies, not to seek personal gain though that does flow to me but to simply be one with all." "You wish to become one with the stock market? I think you have some odd ideas. Do you ever succeed?" "I do on occasion, small maggot," Chu Mei Ash replied, "Still it is most difficult. There are many distractions and at times it is hard to maintain my focus. For instance even now, I am finding it difficult to become one while you are being one."
