>>I trade equities and options and have a good understanding of trading those markets<<

If you trade index options on the long side -- as opposed to writing options -- and are able to do that successfully, I suspect that you will do well trading the spoos. I have stated repeatedly on SI and to anyone who will listen that trading index options is difficult because of the time premium and its erosion -- except when there is a large move in either direction. At least, I for one, have not been successful at it -- I have, however, done well writing OEX options though that is a whole other different approach -- and involves a different set of risks and disciplines quite apart from margin requirements.

>>Finally, it is universally understood that the best traders in the world trade the S&P's<<

I am not sure that I have seen anything that establishes this as a fact. There was a time when I used to read that the "big boys" traded bonds. Ultimately, it is a question of what what one is good at -- the spoos offer some great opportunities for trading if one can handle the volatility.
