CPQ warned today of component shortages as the result of the Taiwan earthquake. If Taiwan were the real reason for disappointing Q3 results, the announcement would have come earlier. I conclude that this is a pre-announcement softening.

Meanwhile, Andy Neff, Senior Managing Director of Bear Stearns, spoke this morning on CNBC. He downplays the CPQ shortage because CPQ, DELL, and IBM have greater leverage over their suppliers than do their second-tier competitors.

Again, if CPQ is warning about component supply, and Andy Neff isn't worried (about component supply) CPQ is positioning for their announcement later this month.

I agree. I do not think there was any message intended except to warning retailers of possible shortages. So if I were a retailer I had better get my orders in now or face higher prices and or shortages. The quake will produce shortages, which may mean higher prices. I would think that Compaq is well into production of this quarter's supply of PCs. Dell would be scrambling now as reports have indicated. Every coin has two sides.
