ON THE POLITICAL FRONT, Mr. Yeltsin's
problems in Russia today are about to become a good
deal worse as bank in Lugano, Switzerland, Banca del
Gottardo, reported this morning that it had indeed been
asked to "guarantee" the credit cards of Mr. Yeltsin and his
family. The bank reports that the Swiss company Mabatex,
in the past rumoured to be at the bottom of corruption
charges centring upon Mr. Yeltsin and him family, asked
that credit cards be issued for Yeltsin and his daughters
(and very probably for his son-in-law), and that the cards be
guaranteed. Mr. Yeltsin has consistently denied any and all
corruption charges, and has denied having had any
business relationship with del Gottardo. The Bank's own
legal department now says that Yeltsin did indeed have
business relations with the bank, making Mr. Yeltsin's
denials all the more difficult to believe.
