<<Most of the barges have grain, but some of them have things like wheat. >>

Last time I raised it, wheat was a grain.

<<(I don't know how they get it to go uphill, but I can find out.) >>

Same way as it goes from truck to silo or silo to silo, elevators. Augers inside of tubes. On a farm the are on wheels and powered by a PTO on a tractor and are called portable elevators. The big suckers at the docks are probably powered by electric motors.

By the way the pushers are called tow boats. Tug boats work the harbors. They have hydraulic lifts to raise and lower the pilot house.

I have spent a lot of time on the river and been around 100s of barges. What's neat is when one is coming and the current reverses. And shallow spots go dry, then way wet, then back to normal.

Well, hearing about these barge loads of grain is well and good.... but what I'd really like to hear about is the barge loads of pig ears... must be a few of them going down the Columbia now and then, eh?

>Drawbrige Guy is another nice job,
but it's boring. The Oregonian interviewed a bunch of them, and that dashed my illusions about that job. I think
I would start drinking. <

And we sure can't have that. <unstable giggle>
I'm coming up and becoming your Drawbridge Guy. I presume they'll let me be on SI while awaiting the too-tall ships?

>(I don't

They have to ~ go against the grain. Imagine the karmic static charge built up around those elevators. Makes your mental socks cling.
