Thanks for the ideas, pae. I'm a tinkerer (read: anal retentive) too, so I have plenty of experience with different looks for my desktop.

I finally have settled on (I think) a normal taskbar, and a detached (extremely thin) Quick Launch bar along the left vertical side. Works well for me so far. I couldn't go back to a vertical taskbar, since then I'm starting at the top of the screen, with the menus cascading downward, something it took a while to 'unlearn' back when we went from DOS programs to Win 95.<g>
