re: what about a central PC used as the 'server' with also I/O capabilities and numberic keypads mounted at different locations for temperature control, humidity control, etc.? Kind of like a PLC but with PC operations including DVD and all the other goodies?<g>

CPQ announced a home-networking roadmap along with their January 1999 consumer home networking capability. Those products already can network an arbitrary number of "intelligent devices" and provide file sharing, internet services, shared printers and most of the "standard" networking functions. The roadmap was about linking up "intelligent devices" to this system - everything from washing machines to intelligent power monitoring.

At the moment it seems like all anyone is doing is standard peer-to-peer stuff, file and print sharing and proxy internet access. Too many different protocols in process for the "non-PC" devices...
