Korea Telecom Selects 3Com Total Control and CoreBuilder 9000 Platforms for Internet Access

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Oct 18, 1999 (BUSINESS WIRE) --

3Com Increases Revenues 303 Percent; Leads
Korea's Remote Access Market with 53 Percent Share

Global networking leader 3Com Corp. (Nasdaq: COMS) today announced
that Korea Telecom has selected the 3Com(R) Total Control(R)
multiservice access platform and the 3Com CoreBuilder(R) 9000 chassis
for an infrastructure upgrade that will enable the simple and scalable
deployment of new, converged service offerings for Korea Telecom's
customers.

Korea Telecom, one of Korea's leading telecommunications companies and
Internet service providers, purchased 12,000 Total Control ports and 58
CoreBuilder 9000 switches to benefit more than 1.6 million Korea
Telecom customers. With this upgrade, valued at approximately US$10
million, Korea Telecom claims almost 30 percent of the total number of
remote access ports in Korea.

According to a report released by International Data Corp. (IDC), 3Com
in the first half of calendar 1999 registered the highest growth of any
company in the Asia Pacific access concentrator market. IDC's figures
show that 3Com's Asia Pacific concentrator market revenues increased
157 percent and that the number of ports shipped increased by 215
percent, compared to the first half of calendar year 1998. In Korea,
IDC figures show that 3Com further consolidated its leadership in the
remote access market with a 303 percent growth in overall revenues for
a 53 percent market share.

According to a report from Synergy Research Group released in
September, 3Com held a 39 percent share of the worldwide Internet
service provider access concentrator market for the second quarter of
1999.

"As Asia Pacific recovers from the economic downturn, more and more
service providers are beginning to invest again in infrastructure and
are choosing the 3Com Total Control multiservice access platform as
their foundation for scalable, reliable service creation," said Matthew
Kapp, president, 3Com Asia Pacific.

"Our Total Control family of multiservice access products incorporates
the latest technology while ensuring a high level of investment
protection for our customers. Our unique approach allows our customers
to migrate easily to new services, while minimizing their total cost of
ownership."

The Total Control platform is the foundation for multiservice,
universal access. Today, 3Com offers customers circuit switched
data/remote access services, fax-over-IP, voice-over-IP, CDMA wireless,
and cable access within the Total Control system. More than seven
million Total Control ports are deployed with service providers
worldwide.

"Korea Telecom is committed to giving our customers world-class
telecommunications services," said Soo Hyung Kim, managing director of
Network Construction, Korea Telecom.

"The combination of 3Com's Total Control and CoreBuilder 9000 platforms
provides the best total solution available today. In particular, the
Total Control technology is recognized as the leading multiservice
access platform on the market, with built-in SS7 and AODI technology
support that will enable us to easily and reliably roll out new service
offerings such as ISDN, Voice over IP and wireless. The built-in
scalability of the Total Control and CoreBuilder solution also provides
us with room for expansion as our customer base grows."

Matthew Kapp continued: "The Total Control multiservice access platform
and CoreBuilder 9000 switch makes for a potent combination that
provides excellent access to Internet applications regardless of
physical location and delivers the high availability needed to support
e-business. The combination gives telecom providers a competitive edge
in providing the next-generation converged service offerings that are
in increasing demand by their customers."

Designed for deployment in the corporate enterprise and metropolitan
area network (MAN), the CoreBuilder 9000 system offers industry-leading
switching capacity. The CoreBuilder 9000 switch is suitable for the
entire range of enterprise applications: high-performance server
connections, wiring closet downlink aggregation, high-density wiring
closets, and high-speed processing of MAN ATM or Gigabit Ethernet
traffic flows.

Bux, when your partner signs deals with your competitor then you can surmise that the bonds of loyalty are tenuous at best. My extrapolations from Qualcom and Nokia indicate that the Palm OS has a very good chance of being the standard OS of the wireless world. When you consider Phillips dropping CE for PalmOS and the remaining members of the Symbian Group (MOT,ERICY and Matsuchita) entertaining the adoption of the PalmOS you can see why I am predisposed to wager 3Com's success against MSFT.

To correct the term jumping ship, lets use the phrase straddling the fence with a intense leaning towards the Palm OS. The way things are going I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't jump ship, but it appears to be more politic to straddle in case you insult your partner.
