She is exceptionally good at fruit pies. Her crust is outstanding, and she makes wonderful apple pies (she prefers Jonathans), peach pies (although the quality of available peaches may vary quite a bit), and blueberry pies (again, sometimes the berries disappoint, but they often come out well). Of course, she has made a number of other pies, like cherry or even, long ago, rhubarb. From time to time she may make a cake, but has discovered that if you are not after something fancy, it is hardly worth the trouble to do it from scratch, and therefore will often use Pillsbury or some other package mix. She has made her own cheesecake, and it has come out well, but it is an awful lot of trouble. She makes excellent cookies, especially around the holidays: hermits, chocolate chip, oatmeal, among other possibilities. She also makes an unusual rum cake: the cake is coarse, almost like a sweetbread, and absorbs quite a bit of dark rum. But her best dessert is not baked. We have gotten into the habit of a Christmas goose, and the dessert is a Bavarian Creme, with raspberry sauce and creme anglais. I like to eat it without the raspberries at first. It is quite delicate, and uses a vanilla bean....
