Mani, Retail is when a person buys an item for his own use. We use the terms wholesale to characterise a purchase that involves a number of items that are then sold item by item to people/industry for their own use. Since the concept wholsale imbues the item with the aura of intercepting an item earlier in the production/distribution/sale process the term has been siezed an and used by many retailers, both web based and brick based. It is still a leg. As to sales taxes?, it is up to the company and whether or not they have a presence in that state. Some companies collect it and pay it some do not if they have no presence. If they have a presence they are forced to pay it. You may have seen the cluster of mail order companies in Nevada that chase the California MO business?, just drive from LA to LV and you will see them in NV.

RE <<The fact of the matter is that online sales are not considered retail by the industry. But as you say, that might just be a technicality.>>>

Mani, that's insane. They refer to Amazon.com as a retailer without the bricks and mortar. Its one of several reasons they think Amzn is way overvalued.....because its not a good retailer profitwise.

What would you call a company that sells retail goods over the net?
