Two topics. First, here is the official response to my web inquiry to Sprint; it took about a week to respond:

"Mr. Goren,

Welcome to Sprint PCS!
In response to your inquiry, the Qualcomm Q phone is not data capable and there is no firmware or software to update it for internet access via the "I" button. I hope this clarifies everything for you. If you have any further questions, please feel free to revisit the web site at your convenience.

Thank you for connecting with Sprint PCS.

Second, regarding the GPS thing. Is it y'all's interpretation that it is merely a software thing that can be added by a firmware update or is it so imbedded in the chip, you have to have a phone with chips that have it?

GPS is a big deal. The safety implications are very important--at least to me as a consumer. I, for one, would want my loved ones to have a phone with the capability of E-911. Plus, the commercial applications of being able to offer/obtain services such as mapping, information of the nearest McDonald's, etc., are awesome. However, it means that cdma will be able to be installed into automobiles and part of the security system, a la OnStar. Huge market.
