Air Canada just blew away all earnings estimates. Now were starting to understand why Onex wants to steal this company so badly. EPS of 65 cents and Cash Flow of $1.10 in the latest quarter. These numbers are very good. Onex can forget about getting Air Canada for $8.25 or even $12.25, it's not on.

The great thing is that Air Canada didn't just report blowout numbers, they also decided to poke Onex in the eye by signing a 10-year agreement with Cara. It's great!

Hi Alomex, you wrote "I do expect Onex to come back with an improved offer. However according to the Globe and Mail AC
seems to have signed a poison pill making it impossible for CA to buy AC at *any* price. How's that for
safeguarding of shareholder's interest?"

Results are all that matters. If the stock price goes up then mgmt is doing a good job right?? This must be true. The Onex deal lovers desperately bleat how the low AC stock price is because of bad mgmt. Apparently there is no other conceivable reason.(but we don't hear about CA's mgmt. WHY?)
Well I say they are correct!! If AC had a more aggressive business strategy then they would have found new business and they would have taken business away from the competition more aggressively. If you can't eliminate your competition because it is just as strong as you then you must join(merge) it in order to grow. If your competition is WEAK(facing bankruptcy)and you can't eliminate it.......B U Y I T.!
If your WEAK competition has a strong friend who wants to help it force you into an undesirable merge....K I L L I T.!
You see, Its all very simple really. Safeguarding shareholder value is exactly what this great company is doing. Using the Onex proponents logic of tying stock performance to leadership then you are forced to concur that R.Milton is doing an excellent job. Look at what the share price has done since he has taken over.!!!
The poison pill will safeguard shareholder value because it will help ward off a hostile bid that would have resulted in a badly structured company. You must realize that there are many different ways the airline industry in Canada could be restructured. Air Canada is looking for the way which benefits its shareholders the most. Don't be fooled into marriage by the first perfumed tart who promises great sex! More often than not promises are changed by semantics and politics. Stick with the facts.
