I'd disagree, Brian. I think both these companies had products on more advanced stage: FCS or in beta 2, before they went public.
Cerent's inception was Jan 1997. They *attempted* to go public Sep 1999. That's 2.5+ years of hard work.
Juniper's inception was Feb 1996, even earlier than Cerent's. They went public this summer... 3+ years.
Sycamore was founded in Feb 1998. There is no magic in this world, their product is NOT done. Yet they are going public now...
